Tip initiated from within the content will require in app purchase while tip from profile page won’t require – Apple App Review to Damus

Recently Apple App Store asked Damus app to bring an upgrade that complies with the Apple in-app purchase guidelines. Damus’ Twitter account wrote on Twitter “Damus will be removed from the app store in 14 days, Apple says zaps are not allowed on their platform they could be used by content creators to sell digital content”.

Earlier Damus removed the zap button on posts after a similar thing happened and wrote “The zaps will continue to flow and there’s nothing Apple can do to stop it. They are fighting a losing battle against open protocols. Arbitrarily restricting ways users can zap in our app will only hurt their customer base for no reason or gain”.

Despite making changes Apple asked to make further changes in the application. Damus has shared the message sent by the Apple App review in which it can be seen both had a conversation on the phone because the message reads “Thank you for your time on the phone today”.

A noticeable point in the message is “while it would be okay to allow users to tip digital content creators from their user profile page using methods other than in-app purchase”. The further message reads “When the tip is initiated from within the content directly, it is then associated with the digital content from the creator and would require in-app purchase as the only payment mechanism”.

Now this means if Damus agrees, it won’t have to channel the payment through Apple in-app purchase for a tip to digital content creators from their user profile page but if the tip is initiated from within the content directly it will require in-app purchase. But Damus, sharing this message wrote on Twitter “Their suggested fix is to use apple pay. Sure, I’ll use apple pay when it supports censorship-resistant, peer-to-peer payments to anyone in the world. Maybe start with peer-to-peer first?”

In a later post, Damus wrote “Banned by CCP because they hate free speech “Banned by CCP because they hate free speech

Banned by Apple because they hate free money”.
