The United States Releases a Declassified Report on the COVID Origins

The disclosed report by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, regarding the COVID-19 origins speaks about the possible hypothesis of the COVID-19 pandemic and also about the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), its capabilities, research, and about its research.

COVID-19 Origins and WIV

Before going directly to the report, just for the sake of our readers, COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and the world’s first COVID-19 case was reported in Wuhan, China following which a pandemic outbreak began in late 2019, spreading across the world, making many sick and causing many to lose their lives. There are many hypotheses regarding the origin of the virus and reports speculating that the virus is man-made and was a creation of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, China. The report that has been shared addresses all these hypotheses and doubts and tries to give a possible explanation for them.

Starting with whether the SARS-CoV-2 virus is natural or man-made, it still remains unclear and both the hypothesis for it to be natural or man-made, at the moment is being considered plausible by different American bodies. The National Intelligence Council along with four other IC agencies of the country, believes that the virus might have arrived from a natural source, through an animal carrying the virus, or through a virus that is closely related to it, which is capable of turning into the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, the Department of Energy and the Federal Bureau of Investigation asserts that the first COVID-19 case might be an aftermath of a laboratory incident.

Now coming to the Wuhan Institute of Virology or WIV, the WIV is a civilian research institute in China founded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) in the 1950s. Even if the WIF is independent of the Peoples Liberation Army(PLA), reports do reveal that WIV has worked with PLA for many public health-related types of research and has collaborated with them on certain biosafety and biosecurity projects. It has also been revealed that much of their research included research with viruses, which includes coronaviruses as well but, none of their research dealt with the SARS-CoV-2 virus or a virus which could be a possible progenitor of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Speaking more about the research institute and its research, WIV has conducted a lot of research on corona viruses and has the world’s biggest repositories of bat samples. The researchers at WIV have also performed genetic engineering with these viruses, including viruses that are similar to SARS-like viruses.

Even if there has never been an incident regarding a virus outbreak at WIV, reports are revealing that there were high chances of such an incident as proper safety measures weren’t being followed.

Finally coming to the researchers who worked there at the time of the pandemic outbreak, many researchers were reported to have been ill, but not due to COVID-19. It should however be noted that the researchers still showed symptoms related to cold and allergies, and also to COVID-19 itself.

In conclusion, nothing has been confirmed with the recently disclosed report but it still gives an idea regarding a lot of possible explanations for the outbreak and its origin.
