GoogleDoodle has always ensured to celebrate and mark important historical events. Through their Doodles they represent, celebrate, and mark various significant events, festivals, and many more.
Today’s GoogleDoodle celebrated and marked the important historical event – Juneteenth.
Laura Freeman, a guest artist illustrator for Google created today’s Google Doodle.

The artwork showcases a celebration of the event by a multi-generational community. The talent also used symbols of freedom, which even includes a dove, Juneteenth flag, and Kente cloth patterns.
For the unversed, on June 19, 1865, freedom was delivered to the enslaved Black Americans in Galveston Bay, Texas. On this day, Emancipation Proclamation announced the end of slavery in Confederate states. This officially marked the end of the Civil War.
Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in the year 1863. However, many Confederate-controlled states continued to oppose it. Texas was one of them.
On this day, the Union troops marched to the port city of Galveston. They issued the now-famous General Orders, Number 3, through which freedom was announced to thousands of Black Texans.
In the year 1980, Juneteenth became an official state holiday in Texas. In the month of June 2021, Juneteenth became a national federal holiday.
Black Americans mark this day, by organizing various events and gatherings which honour the struggles of the people of the past. Along with it, they honor and acknowledge everyone’s efforts toward building a more just and equitable country.
